ABSTRACT

Richard Douthwaite is interested in identifying the unsustainable characteristics of our economic system so that they can be changed. In 1998–99 he worked on a European Union-funded project to establish experimental community currency systems in Scotland, the West of Ireland, Amsterdam and Madrid. The Ecology of Money (1999), which proposes a radical restructuring of national and international money systems, grew out of this experience and his work as economic adviser to the Global Commons Institute, which is concerned with halting human-induced climate change.
