ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces findings of the author’s research and practical experience in the field of ecodesign and sustainable design, in particular the findings of a research project on ecodesign approaches that econcept carried out with other organisations on behalf of the German Federal Environmental Agency. It focuses on tools for ecodesign, because tools for a holistic sustainable design are still missing and less developed. The chapter illustrates where tools can be applied to solve problems arising at specific points in the product development process. It provides a selection of tools for the different stages and tasks of the development process that facilitate ecodesign and sustainable design activities. Design approaches must be re-evaluated at different stages of the planning process, and assessment criteria should not only be considered from an environmental and social point of view but also with regard to profitability, marketability and technical feasibility.
