ABSTRACT

This chapter presents case study that illustrates the design and development of the Dishlex dishwasher range, providing a glimpse of what can be achieved through a collaborative process that adopts the environment as a critical design focus. Demonstrating how the design process can integrate environmental factors within a commercial context is a critical step towards reconfiguring the psyche of product designers, engineers, companies, educators and students. An essential objective of demonstration programmes is to assist individual companies with the know-how required to design greener products with reduced life-cycle environmental impacts. EcoReDesign provides Australian companies with design support and environmentally related research and development to help ensure that greener products reach the market in Australia and overseas. In terms of modifying the EcoReDesign process, much can be done to further streamline the methodology and to communicate a simpler step-wise view of how to realise an environmentally improved product or service.
