ABSTRACT

A new management tool, the balanced scorecard (BSC), was launched in order to translate the new strategic priorities into action. The concept of the BSC was developed in the beginning of the 1990s by R. S. Kaplan and D. P. Norton in order to bridge the gap between strategic management and operational daily management. A company-wide environmental goal was developed, introduced and translated into indicators and measures. A sustainability balanced scorecard is a type of BSC specifically designed to reflect the issues and objectives of corporate sustainability. The Berlin Water Company, which is the largest water supply and waste-water treatment company in Germany, serves 3.4 million people. The task of environmental protection is decentralised across the business units, where it is the responsibility of environmental managers, co-ordinators and skilled workers. The partial privatisation brought tremendous changes in management and organisation.
