ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on promoting cleaner and safer methods of production, with the financial support of European Commission Directorate General III: Industry and in conjunction with organisations such as the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, UNEP TIE carried out a two-phase project on how to improve systems for communicating environmental best practice in industry. Communicating environmental information to industry in order to get it to incorporate environmental concerns into management decisions faces a number of obstacles. The need to provide industry, including small and medium-sized enterprises, with information on how best to incorporate environmental management strategies is widely recognised. International trends such as environmental management systems, environmental reporting, and other forms of voluntary codes of conduct, are known. Environmental best-practice information for an enterprise varies depending on the industry sector, geographical situation, and the regulatory, environmental and management commitment to implement change. The industry needs to be able to process the information and to make changes.
