ABSTRACT

When spent grain is used as a substrate for mushroom farming and earthworm cultivation, a cost of disposal is converted into a revenue stream. When the waste substrate from the mushroom farming is used as cattle feed or for further earthworm farming, it is once more generating revenues. The Brown Revolution has only just begun. With appetites in the West clearly tilting towards healthy food, mushrooms will become a core component of everyday diets. The Red Revolution has nothing to do with communism. It is about the earthworm, and is labelled ‘red’ because the predominant species we farm and promote worldwide as a means of regenerating humus is the red Californian earthworm—a monoculture of worms. The blue revolution is fish farming. In nature—in the seas, oceans, lakes and rivers—there is never a need for anyone to feed the fish and aerate the water.
