ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the main concepts regarding the dynamics of technological change and shows why technologies tend to be resistant to social demands to change them. Innovation is frequently fuelled by the enthusiasm of scientists and engineers, and steered by paradigms that guide knowledge creation and objectives for improvement. The linear model assumes a linear sequence that starts with basic research and leads to the use of new products by consumers. In the Social Construction Of Technology model, the assignment of meaning, the signalling of problems and solving them are aspects of the process of technological development.
