ABSTRACT

Eco-Ratings could be used to track implementation of the environmental management plan, and help address lapses during the project phase itself. Tata Energy Research Institute (TERI) developed the Eco-Rating System (ERS): a framework for evaluating the environmental performance and risk of facilities against generally accepted benchmarks. Preliminary experience indicates that ERS is a tool with the potential to improve the quality of decision-making and also encourage information-sharing in the area of corporate environmental performance. The ERS framework is primarily aimed at addressing the problem of ambiguity and lack of transparency in environmental issues. The impact of ERS may be observed at two levels: in a company's internal decision-making and in stakeholder decision-making in relation to a company. The resemblance of ERS to the Programme for Pollution Control, Evaluation and Reporting and Eco-Watch programmes to some extent reaffirms the commonality of contexts prevailing in most Asian developing countries.
