ABSTRACT

Baxter is widely recognised as one of the leading companies in the field because of the range and depth of its activities. This chapter examines the development of environmental performance evaluation and reporting during the 1990s at an individual company, Baxter International. It provides background business and environmental management information, and a detailed description of the evolution of Baxter's environmental performance evaluation activities. The chapter describes and discusses the types of measure used by Baxter. It also describes the process of performance evaluation and reporting within the company. The chapter details the development of data collection practices and systems. It reviews four particular aspects of the particular indicators that Baxter uses. They include: an analysis in terms of ISO 14031's typology of categories of indicator, an analysis in terms of ISO 14031's typology of types of indicator, methods used by Baxter to calculate relative indicators, i.e. bases of normalisation, and adjusting historic time-series data for acquisitions and disposals of businesses.
