ABSTRACT

This chapter examines features of the transition currently taking place in the move from the conventional expectation of environmental loss within economic development to a new, more positive perspective of environmental gain. It focuses on environmental protection and economic development reviews aspects of policy integration, international perspectives, the theory of ecological modernisation and the concept of environmental gain. The chapter discusses green teams in regional economic strategies are considered, followed by examples of team-driven strategies drawn from the European Union Structural Funds programmes. It analyses the key determinants of this team-oriented activity with special reference to environmental factors, focusing on objective, team composition, team management and orientation. An important feature of team composition is the ability of team members to transcend the idea of separate functional or independent government departments or other agencies and instead work together to realise a common goal. The chapter concludes with a summary of key issues arising.
