ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the main components that comprise a generic environmental management programme: the structure, responsibilities, focus and ultimate goal to establish a common understanding of what environmental management is. It explores how good, effective and well-thought-out environmental training can make a difference over time to enhance the effectiveness and sustainability of a proper environmental management system (EMS). Within the framework of maintaining a proper EMS, training, or, focused training with clear objectives and expectations from management, can go a long way towards achieving such maintenance. Within the context of evaluating an organisation's environmental performance, one of the areas to be evaluated by environmental performance evaluation is the management of an organisation that includes the people, practices and procedures at all levels of the organisation. If training can impart beneficial knowledge to the affected employees in the execution of their work responsibilities, the chances are, monies may be budgeted for such training opportunities.
