ABSTRACT

Climate disruption is the greatest threat to the health, safety, and well being of humanity today. It is important to understand that the personal psychological distress and psycho-social-spiritual maladies generated by climate disruption go well beyond the traumatic effects of extreme weather events to include many types of chronic toxic stresses. It becomes evident that climate disruption will put an end to many eras, including the epochs of unconstrained fossil fuel use, material and energy consumption, degradation of forests, wetlands, and other ecological systems that sequester carbon, and other activities that today seem completely natural and normal. Building the capacity for Transformational Resilience will require adults and youth alike learn how trauma and toxic stress can affect their minds and bodies. Integrated strategies also needs in every nation to build widespread capacity for Transformational Resilience. The chapter also presents some of the concepts discussed in this book.
