ABSTRACT

It took time to help people understand that building their capacity for Transformational Resilience would not only help safeguard them from the harmful personal and social reactions to climate impacts, it could also provide a platform for addressing many of the activities in the community that traumatize them. Extremely important when building the capacity for Transformational Resilience within communities is linking social support networks. Community efforts aimed at enhancing the capacity of residents for Transformational Resilience do not need to solely or specifically focus on climate disruption. Instead, it can emphasize building human resilience for the unique challenges facing the community, be they high levels of adverse childhood experiences, soaring school dropout rates, widespread substance abuse, crime and violence, or other issues. Researchers have examined different ways in which the depth and breadth of social support networks can be enhanced to build human resilience.
