Learning from the past

It has become increasingly obvious that we must now move towards not only more ‘eco-efficient’ or ‘low-carbon’ products and systems, but also towards more sustainable consumption practices. As I have argued, the Jevons paradox is alive and well: technological innovations or improvements introduced to increase efficiencies and reduce emissions are often found to be implicated in ‘vertical’ or ‘horizontal’ increases in overall consumption.
