ABSTRACT

India’s economic growth story of the last two decades has not translated to inclusive development. This has led to a new regulation, mandating companies to spend 2% of their net profit on community development projects. This chapter explores the nature and extent of corporate NGO partnership in Indian public sector mining companies while implementing CSR projects. We study the CSR projects of two Indian mining companies M and N. We find evidence of partnerships that are transactional in nature and focused on project delivery. The other emerging trend is of outsourcing CSR to a large partner for design, execution and delivery of CSR projects. We problematize such development and conclude that without better partnership models and practices even a mandatory CSR regime will fail to deliver the goal of business-funded inclusive development in an emerging economy like India.
