ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the national approaches to sustainable enterprise in Kenya. It includes key information about the priority issues, trends, and government policies as well as best-practice case studies of sustainable enterprise in Kenya. The country is generally perceived as eastern and central Africa's hub for financial, communication and transportation services. Social enterprises have risen in leaps and bounds due to Kenya's economic circumstances. The social enterprise discourse in Kenya is still taking shape, and as there is no distinct legally recognized entity or office of social enterprise in Kenya, social enterprises use existing organizational structures to further their goals. In fact, with regards to government policy, according to Chege, social enterprises lack recognition and support from governments, as well as access to needed financial resources and business development skills. The Kenyan economy relies heavily on natural resources to support people's livelihoods and to contribute to national income.
