ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the national approaches to sustainable enterprise in Nigeria. It includes key information about the priority issues, trends, and government policies as well as best-practice case studies of sustainable enterprise in Nigeria. Sustainable enterprise is still in its infancy in Nigeria. The Millennium Development Goals are a key part of the economic development of Nigeria, particularly improving maternal health and ensuring environmental sustainability, although it is not clear just how effective the environmental improvement has been. Businesses have embraced Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and this is now morphing into an acceptance of sustainability, although the Sustainable Banking Principles have stalled. More such policies are needed, so there is huge potential for sustainable enterprises. Given the number of organizations grappling with Nigeria's issues, it is only a matter of time before sustainable enterprises will become a key aspect of its economy.
