ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the national approaches to sustainable enterprise in Iran. It includes key information about the priority issues, trends, and government policies as well as best-practice case studies of sustainable enterprise in Iran. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in Iran is a contextual subject, influenced by the international isolation of Iranian business, in terms of sanctions and political relations. The concept of sustainable development has been adopted in some corporate policies and operating procedures. Iran's Department of Environment has established a National Committee on Sustainable Development as a key coordination mechanism to increase the level of sustainability practices in ministries and state-owned enterprises. The cross-departmental committee is responsible for evaluating the framework and strategy for sustainable development and overseeing the response to Agenda 21, the Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Convention on Biological Diversity and other relevant policies.
