ABSTRACT

This chapter presents Suriname profile that includes sustainable enterprise in context; priority issues, trends, government policies and case studies. Rice in Suriname is the staple food and creates employment through smallholder farming, stimulates entrepreneurship and contributes to the GDP. Only 12% of the population is working in agriculture, almost half of them in the rice production in the western part of Suriname, in Nickerie. A focus on sustainable agriculture, food production and processing by innovative technologies through agricultural small and medium-sized enterprises, combined with capacity building for the local farmers and the youth, can initiate a sustainable transition from mining to a more permanent income generation and decrease the carbon footprint. Some farmers received a loan from SOIL to improve their agricultural practice. One of them won a prize as most innovative small agri-business in Suriname. Sustainable agricultural entrepreneurship combined with technology is an opportunity to create a more balanced development for the country.
