ABSTRACT

This chapter presents United States of America profile that includes sustainable enterprise in context; priority issues, trends, government policies and case studies. Most of the focus on sustainability among US companies is centred on incremental change and reporting. Companies are also focused on seeking certifications which demonstrate their commitment to sustainability. In the USA, companies are not legally required to integrate sustainability and responsibility into their strategy. At a national level, the State Department and the Bureau of Economic and Business Affairs promote the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises but they do not hold companies accountable. Americans are increasingly demonstrating a concern for social and environmental causes through their purchasing habits. The company has set ambitious ten-year "destination goals" for 2020, including cutting its environmental footprint in half, improving the health of young people in its hometown community, and promoting 100% employee engagement in its sustainability and corporate social responsibility programmes.
