ABSTRACT

This chapter presents Uruguay profile that includes sustainable enterprise in context; priority issues, trends, government policies and case studies. Uruguay is slowly becoming an attractive environment for sustainable enterprise. The Uruguayan government and other international institutions are increasing investments to build capacity on sustainable development, but Uruguay's small domestic market means that businesses must look towards international markets if they wish to "scale up" operations. Globally, Uruguay stands at 82 in the ranking of 189 economies on the ease of doing a business. The first public surveys on public and corporate attitudes towards corporate social responsibility (CSR) found that Uruguay is in its early stages of CSR, with a scarce public knowledge of the concept of CSR. The most common CSR activities by Uruguayan enterprises focused internally on their employees, rather than broader strategic interventions in society and/or the community. While Uruguay global rankings in innovation and ease of doing business are increasing, accessing capital can remain a challenge.
