ABSTRACT

Chile could benefit from greater investment in the component Ecosystem Sustainability, with a relative weakness in water management. According to the 2013 KPMG Corporate Responsibility Reporting, 73% of Chilean companies issued Global Reporting Initiative sustainability reports. Chile has to follow the OECD's Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises, which sets out the responsibilities of good corporate citizenship. Moreover, as a country that relies mainly on mineral exploitation, it has also to take into account the OECD Due Diligence Guidance for Responsible Supply Chains of Minerals from Conflict-Affected and High-Risk Areas. An OECD report regarding environmental issues in Chile stated that the mining sector contributed significantly to some of the most common air borne pollutants, and to the inadequate treatment of the toxic and hazardous waste discharged into local watercourses. The OECD Environmental Performance Review also stated the need to integrate environmental concerns into fiscal policies and economic decisions.
