ABSTRACT

It has been more than 30 years since the first meeting with the Dalai Lama sparked a quest for meaning in my life and in business. My journey began as a young lawyer with an interest in Asia. I then became a banker in China and other emerging markets when financial capitalism reached its zenith. The ongoing meetings with the Dalai Lama helped me to trust my intuition that something was wrong with the financial system—as indeed we saw during the 2008 financial crash and the collapse of seemingly strong and solid financial institutions and whole markets. In my mind, it marked the end of an era in the history of capitalism, as we had known it.
