ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author describes how relieved his audience was at the World Economic Forum's "Davos in New York" meeting in early February 2002 in New York City when he presented GlobeScan's December 2001 tracking results on globalization. Globalization is a reality, but one with the ability to mutate into a monster. An equally important part of my World Economic Forum presentation back in February 2002 was that, while globalization was seen as positive overall, the research showed that it was widely seen as bad for the environment, jobs, and economic equality. The economic recession that began in 2009 continued the decline in support for economic globalization. Steven Kull at Program on International Policy Attitudes at the University of Maryland contends it is not necessarily inconsistent for the same individuals to support both globalization and increased protectionism. In a 2007 segmentation analysis of international data, GlobeScan found an anti-globalist segment representing an average of 19% of the population.
