ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses specifically on the perspectives of a wealth manager, and seeks to address three aspects: why the financial industry should be involved in this space?; how UBS engages in this sector?; and what are the challenges and opportunities for wealth managers active in the sector? It focuses on the latter areas where social impact discussions are becoming ever more embedded in the overall wealth management approach. UBS understands the societal responsibility that comes with being the world's largest wealth manager and, at the time of writing, more than 20% of total investment assets use sustainable investment criteria. Impact investing seeks to generate a positive social or environmental impact alongside a financial return, unlike other sustainable investing approaches, where progress on social and environmental issues may be a by-product of financial enterprise. The chapter also discusses a number of embedded challenges to take social impact and impact investing to the mainstream.
