ABSTRACT

This chapter considers some of the strategic issues for packaging from a business perspective. It begins by describing several packaging trends that may either support or constrain a company's ability to achieve sustainability improvements. The chapter highlights the diversity of approaches to packaging stewardship within firms. It provides evidence that companies will take action voluntarily when there is a business case to do so. The chapter also provides examples of initiatives in corporate policy, design for sustainability, procurement strategies and packaging recovery. It reviews the expectations of five key stakeholder groups: consumers, product and packaging manufacturers (producers), government regulators, environmental groups and municipalities. The chapter looks at some of the drivers for product stewardship and the issues of most concern to each group. It explores some of the actions being taken by corporate leaders in packaging. Many well-known global brands in the packaging supply chain have sustainability goals for packaging that go well beyond compliance with regulations.
