ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the communications and coordination core as the mechanism that reaches across the organization and provides the various "value-adding" subsystems with the ability to efficiently communicate, coordinate, and prioritize their work efforts. By accepting the fact that businesses and organizations are living subsystems that interact within a larger economic system and the belief that there are common characteristics among all types of systems, humans were able to build a new business model that will enable and support business behaving as a system. The chapter looks at businesses and organizations from this perspective and discusses the journey to identify the elements of a new business model based on these system characteristics. The purpose of developing a systems-based business model is to introduce a broader, more comprehensive understanding of how business can be structured and conducted. It highlights how business processes, beliefs, and inherent assumptions contribute to the inconsistent behavior and results experienced by both workers and management.
