ABSTRACT

A leading business school in Eastern Europe—Riga Business School—transforms a conventional core course, Organizational Behaviour, into a platform for learning how to alleviate poverty. Students are challenged to run social ventures in partnership with different stakeholders; meanwhile, they study the fundamentals of people and organizational management. This chapter describes the details of the initiative and its academic foundations, and recounts the first results. This initiative proves the potential of business schools’ curricula to help students to creatively and responsibly solve social problems without compromising the bottom line. Readers will find this experience useful, as it can be replicated in other schools without substantial investment of resources.
