ABSTRACT

For many environmental organizations, that has changed in recent years as they have begun to see opportunities to leverage the resources of the private sector to achieve environmental aims. The environmental conservation movement is not new, of course, but it has not historically been a typical career path for MBAs. In fact, for much of its history, the environmental conservation movement has been in direct opposition to business, and distrustful of business school graduates. Other NGO initiatives such as the Natural Resource Defense Council's Center for Market Innovation are developing strategies or policies aimed at market-based solutions to environmental problems. Most nonprofit professionals feel a great deal of satisfaction from working so directly on improving the world for the better. And, despite the salary trade-offs, some nonprofits offer better benefits packages, work-life balance options, and other perks for their employees than private-sector employers.
