ABSTRACT

Most sustainability practitioners are happy to make time for informational interviews with MBA students when they can. Many MBAs have success sending "cold" emails to contacts that they identify but have no connection to. More than half of the MBA graduates the author interviewed had a story to tell about a sustainability internship or job offer that came as a direct or indirect result of an informational interview. There is an art to conducting a great informational interview, and if MBA student do it well, it can lead to a job offer, though it will take some time. Another important tip in conducting informational interviews is to clearly understand MBA students own goals for each call — and note that those goals will change over the course of their job search. One of the best things they can do to stand out in an informational interview is to bring some insights or connections of value to the relationship.
