ABSTRACT

The relationship between product design and sustainability lies at the foundation of the circular economy, as it does for most schools of sustainability. Workplace design and organizational design also play important, though less vaunted roles in any sustainable approach, and we explore the latest thinking in these areas. However, design has been included in what are called wicked problems, i.e. difficult to solve due to inadequate information and complex interdependences. In this chapter we trace the history of this relationship and explore what the future hold for design towards sustainability.
