ABSTRACT

Pachacuti is a pioneer in ethical fashion, practising Fair Trade since 1992, and since then authors have kept on pushing the boundaries of what is possible within the fashion supply chain, aiming to provide a role model to challenge compromise and mediocrity within the industry. At Pachacuti, authors believe that authentic luxury incorporates both social and environmental responsibility without compromising on style. From the outset, Pachacuti was committed not just to Fair Trade principles, but to the promotion of traditional skills and to community development, focusing on working with women's groups who were economically, socially or geographically marginalised. For many years, the Conran Shop was Pachacuti's main source of revenue and our hats became the best-selling item in their gardening department in London, Paris and Japan. Pachacuti does not use any commodities covered by the Fairtrade mark, so certification seemed an important means of differentiating ourselves in an increasingly crowded ethical marketplace.
