ABSTRACT

The Swiss banking scandal, brought out the worst of the Swiss people, in action as well as words. Researchers too, became fascinated by the thought of finding dormant accounts, looted gold, new and undiscovered plots by the “evil Swiss bankers.” In reality, the bankers cared little about the source of the money or gold they accepted from the Jews and the Nazis alike. The Nazis might have been running out of luck, but the Swiss bankers wished to keep theirs going. For individual Nazis, as well as the formal state apparatus of which they were a part, occupied Europe was a playground, an opportunity to enrich themselves. For the bankers, making money was a richly motivating factor. The fact, however, that the Swiss bankers seemed to go out of their way to accomodate the Germans, adds an evil cynicism to their greed.
