ABSTRACT

Two movements are hard at work to undermine the world—materialism and mysticism. Materialism is theoretically wrong. Mysticism is a much more sophisticated evil. It is a product of the absolute idealistic outlook at the opposite side of materialism. The historical source of mysticism is the Far East. Hundreds of millions of people dispensed years ago with their common sense, and were afflicted by a chronic disease called irrationalism. The nidus of mysticism is located, like so many other poisonous ideas, in eastern Asia, not in a well-marked geographic point of this vast continent but in the characteristic way of life and outlook. Aldous Huxley resented very much the oppression of contemplative mysticism that began to flourish at the end of the Middle Ages. The absurdity to ascribe human attributes to God, though admitting that attributes are nonexistent, served the purpose to satisfy the need for a personal contact with the Creator.
