ABSTRACT

In his book of 1864 entitled "Dialogues in Hell between Machiavelli and Montesquieu," the Frenchman Maurice Joly placed Niccolo Machiavelli in hell in order to have him discuss power and law with Montesquieu (Joly 1990). The book was published anonymously in Brussels and smuggled into France. Joly was discovered by the French police, arrested and ultimately sentenced to 18 months in prison by the imperial court (Joly 1990, 367-369). The reason: Machiavelli stood for Napoleon III.
