ABSTRACT

What will the history books write about Jaruzelski's role a hundred years after his historic decision? How will Poland, Europe, and the world evaluate the shifting of courses in which Jaruzelski participated so significantly — the declaration of martial law in 1981, the democratization of Poland in 1989? Will the prison guard of the democracy movement stand in the foreground or will it be the patriot pressured from the outside who reluctantly took on the temporary role of dictator in order to prevent the worst from happening?
