ABSTRACT

The difficulty in studying Lawrence is not exactly to determine what he was. The difficulty is to know what to accept from Lawrence, what to reject, what to believe and how to believe it, what to make of him, in a word. Mrs. Catherine Carswell's different conception of Lawrence makes her write a study which is entirely different in method and intention. All those who write about Lawrence try to make him out as some sort of religious teacher. Lawrence was always announcing that the age was corrupt, and that he rejected it; and he was continually haunted by the notion of a pure terrestrial paradise. While he sits in England trying to last out the dreary war years, he plans a colony in Florida. Lawrence wrote Classic American Literature during the gloomy war years in England, while toying from time to time with the idea of a colony in Florida.
