ABSTRACT

Would it be fair to tax the Democratic party and give the money to the Republican National Committee? Or to impose a special surtax on Planned Parenthood in order to finance the political activities of the anti-abortion movement? Would it be just to tax labor unions and use the proceeds for anti union corporate lobbying? Apparently, a number of state legislatures (par ticularly California’s) and a large and growing lobbying force believes so. Special taxes on “sin” are being imposed by state and local governments to finance propaganda campaigns for certain (government-approved) lifestyles. Led by the likes of Senator Ted Kennedy (D-Mass.), political activists who might best be labeled neo-Puritans are trying to force Americans to adopt their own version of “clean living.”
