ABSTRACT

When the mother was present and eating the new food, her weanling kittens started to consume it during the first or the next session with the mother. For cats, one such food was bananas. Offering it to adult cats in our laboratory evoked a reaction of turning the head away from the banana slices, and other signs of disgust, including escape from the observation area by some of the tested cats. In an adult cat, under pentobarbital anesthesia, two monopolar electrodes were implanted bilaterally in the lateral hypothalamus. When the mother’s behavior stabilized, the kittens, one or two at a time, were introduced to the compartment together with the mother. The age of the kittens varied between four and ten weeks. The kittens introduced with the mother to the experimental compartment were allowed to behave as they pleased.
