ABSTRACT

The entire period of the 1905 Revolution was marked by fierce struggle between the defenders of the Russian monarchy and the forces of the opposition. The Revolution culminated in the December uprising in Moscow when government troops fought fiercely with workers' detachments. The situation in Russia in the very beginning of the twentieth century, while having some similarities to that of modern European societies, was nevertheless, different in many respects. The violent revolutionary upheaval, started by the 1905 Revolution, brought political life to Russia. The situation at the beginning of the twentieth century in Russia was unique because no political group felt firmly in control. At the same time most political parties did not feel they were defeated and therefore had lost their chance to solidify their position. The dramatic political struggle compelled Russian intellectuals to take the history of the French Revolution more seriously than ever. Topics of interest became more tightly connected with the current political situation in Russia.
