The Societal Model and its Career

Societal models are the units o f social change. Each constitutes an attempt to integrate a technological style with a politico-economic regime. W e

underline the word “attempt” here. For reasons already discussed in chapter

4, changes in societal realms as defined by technological style and politico -

economic regime take place with phase displacements. For this reason,

precise equilibrium is impossible. Rather, developments are characterized

by successive imbalances which, however, can go through a phase o f more

or less successful coupling o f the politico-economic regime with the

technological style within every model.
