ABSTRACT
Few institutions have made as startling a career during modernity as the state.
Along with the state, transnational corporations and, o f course, schools must
also be mentioned. Everywhere, however, the latter are organized by the state
and thus form an important aspect o f modem state evolution. Why did the
state so enormously expand its functions, its power, and the resources it
controls?
