ABSTRACT

The Memphis fire department dispatcher radioed, "Unit Six, respond to 3764 Elvis Presley Boulevard. What followed was a bizarre series of statements and events giving birth to the Memphis mystery or a "musical Watergate." Listening to background police scanners, some Memphis newspeople made note of the famous address. Many speculated Vernon Presley must have suffered another coronary. The white and orange emergency ambulance sped toward Memphis Baptist Memorial Hospital, sometimes hitting speeds of eighty miles per hour. The most outspoken critics were fan club officers and members, plus newsletter editors and their contributors. Vernon called many devoted club administrators, who literally spend weeks promoting Elvis, asking them not to come to the services. The two Memphis newspapers ran several pieces stemming from the increasingly controversial cause of death. The remainder of the material dealt with finances and Vernon's health.
