ABSTRACT

Ernesto “Che” Guevara led the way in 1960, taking a group of Cuban soldiers into the Congo. That particular expedition failed, and Guevara and his men had to flee. This, however, did not discourage Castro. He built up an extensive military presence in Africa, with troops and/or advisors in some 15 countries. In Ethiopia and Angola there were Cuban armies, the largest contingent being in Angola. Because of the sizeable Cuban force in Angola, the war in that country was of particular interest to Radio Marti, a Voice of America program that broadcasts to Cuba. As news director of Radio Marti, Mallin made two trips to Angola to cover the conflict there. On one occasion he flew in a small, darkened plane over Cuban-controlled territory.
