ABSTRACT

I have had the opportunity to work with Paul Kurtz both in the classroom and in the field. As an undergraduate student at the State University of New York at Buffalo, I first met Paul when I attended his course on “Philosophy and Parapsychology.” Unlike most of the philosophy courses I had taken, this one involved actual hands-on experimentation. He had the students perform all sorts of experiments to see if they in fact had paranormal powers. And while none of them were able to demonstrate this, he seemed genuinely interested in determining if such powers as ESP, telepathy, psychokinesis and hypnosis were real and could be replicated. This was not the cynical scoffer I had heard tales about. What is more, his class actually showed the scientific method in action, rather than merely describing it.
