ABSTRACT

The healing tradition has deep roots in primitive cultures. It is found in the Bible and throughout history, particularly before the growth of modern medicine. Fortunately, with the advance of science and technology, most people have turned to medical practitioners for the cure of illness; superstition and belief in miraculous healings have waned. The Reverend Ernest Angley is a popular television preacher. Angley has gained surprising notoriety as a faith-healer. On his television shows he goes through his curious antics of "healing" all kinds of afflictions: from cancer, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, and alcoholism to deafness and blindness. Angley called out, asking that any alcoholics or drug addicts who wished to be healed come forth. As the healing session concluded, several hundred moved toward the front of the church lustily singing hymns; many were tearful, others joyful, others babbled in tongues.
