ABSTRACT

Nigeria, situated on the Gulf of Guinea along the Atlantic Coast of Africa, is the most populous nation in Africa, the seventh most populous country in the world, and the world's twentieth largest economy. The Nigerian economy is a "mixed emerging economy"–"mixed" because it is partly agricultural and partly industrialized and "emerging" because its recent economic performance has been relatively strong, even though poverty remains widespread. Worldwide, urban agriculture has become widespread as more and more urban dwellers attempt to grow some share of their own food. "Grow Food, Not Grass!" amply describes the general thrust of the US urban agriculture movement. One difference between urban and rural farming is that urban farmers plant annuals almost exclusively. Potentially important gender differences were observed among Iwo State's urban agriculturalists. In most cases, the gender differences were not categorical; all garden chores that the study asked about were done by at least some men and at least some women.
