ABSTRACT

In 1995, the United Nations World Social Summit met in Copenhagen and obligated the nations of the world to eliminate absolute poverty everywhere. One promising strategy that began to receive quite a bit of attention around 2000 was the promotion of tourism, especially to rural areas of developing and emerging nations. According to the World Tourism Organization, International tourism to developing countries is significant and increasing. Dr. Li Yang's study is one of several now available in the literature that focus on the People's Republic of China. A unique type of tourism in rural areas in China is known as nongjiale and this became the principal model for tourism in Zhongding. A major problem for tourism in the region is that there is a definite tourist season and tourists are rare the rest of the year. The subsidy program was launched by the local government in order to promote tourism in 2002.
