ABSTRACT

This chapter attempts to demonstrate that Oswald Spengler's theory of civilization, indeed, his theory of history in general, is through and through imbued with Far Right ideological assumptions. His culturpessimismus derives from his dichotomy of cultur and ciivilization. The chapter outlines a complete condemnation of modern culture and politics, thereby prompting him to reach for a totalitarian resolution of present problems. Anti-Semitism is integral to his whole conception of history, for it underlies his invention of the idea of a Magian civilization, which he considered to be his own actual discovery. The main purpose of this supposed historical entity is the exclusion of Jews from any participation in the major currents of European civilization. The chapter returns Spengler's view of the inevitability of civilization and shows how this inclines him to Caesarism and the Machine, namely, to totalitarianism and technology.
