ABSTRACT

The summer of 2011 commenced with social protests in Greece against planned severe cuts in public spending and tax raise declared due to the inefficiency of the state budget. Young people who start their professional career should be hungry for success. They are not a social group awaiting unemployment benefits, but should be offered every possible support to build their own economic well-being themselves. They deserve a solid fishing rod and not a fish. Microfinance can offer such an opportunity in Europe, similar to what it did in less wealthy societies. Microfinance is not a magic wand that will solve all global problems; however, it has proved a powerful developmental tool, especially when combined with education and a supportive environment. Current waves of tensions across Europe and the United States serve as a good indicator of a “negative” mobilization of society, which can take place if the process of implementing change goes wrong.
